Seagate begins shipping 18 TB SkyHawk AI hard drives in commercial quantities
Seagate Technology today announced the start of serial deliveries of Skyhawk Artificial Intelligence (AI) hard disk drives with a capacity of 18 TB. According to the manufacturer, this is the world's first hard drive specially designed for video surveillance systems with support for artificial intelligence, allowing you to make faster and smarter decisions. It supports deep and machine learning workload streams for edge applications with ImagePerfectAI.

For deep learning systems to become smarter and more accurate in their predictive analysis, the ability to store more data over time is required, and behavior analysis requires significantly more data than traditional video capture. In this regard, SkyHawk AI simultaneously supports 32 AI streams along with 64 video streams and works as part of network video recording systems with multiple compartments and AI support. The SkyHawk AI resource is claimed to be able to record 550 TB of data in a year, which is more than three times the workload of standard hard drives for video surveillance systems. This allows you to use the drives in complex video surveillance environments without compromising performance. According to the manufacturer, the drive "intelligently adapts between traditional video workloads and video + AI workloads."

The 3.5-inch drive is equipped with a 6 Gbit/s SATA interface. It uses "conventional" magnetic recording (CMR) technology. The hermetic zone is filled with helium. The buffer size is 256 MB. The average power consumption is 8 W, while in sleep mode it is reduced to 1.3 W.

The range includes models with volumes of 18, 16, 14, 12, 10 and 8 TB. They have a three-year warranty. The recommended retail price for an 18 TB HDD is approximately $ 511.
