On Friday, the head of Tsinghua Unigroup Zhao Weiguo opened the ceremony of the beginning of the construction of the third plant for the production of 3D NAND in China. The new plant, funded by Tsinghua, will be built near the city of Chengdu on an area of 4.8 km. The expected volume of investments for 5-10 years will amount to $24 billion. This will be the third 300-mm plant for the production of 3D NAND, which actually finances Tsinghua.

The first plant for the production of 3D NAND with the participation of Tsinghua began to build a subsidiary of Yangtze River Storage Technology (YMTC) near the city of Wuhan. Now this company produces 32-layer 3D NAND in limited batches. Mass production launch is expected in early 2019. Investments in this project will also amount to about $ 24 billion.

In February 2017, Tsinghua began construction of a second 300 mm plant for the production of 3D NAND, but near Nanjing. The first phase of investment in this project amounted to $ 10.5 billion, at the end of which the company will be able to produce 100 thousand 300-mm plates with 3D NAND memory every month. The total investment in all three projects approached $70 billion. This figure is comparable with purchases by Chinese companies of foreign production memory. So, in 2017, China bought memory for $88.6 billion to Leave such amounts in the country-this is the right decision.
