Toyota will begin production of electric vehicles in the United States with a huge three-row SUV
Toyota has announced that it will begin production of a battery-electric SUV starting in 2025 at its Toyota Motor Manufacturing plant in Georgetown, Kentucky.

"This is incredible news that advances Kentucky as an electric vehicle center," said Governor Andy Beshear in a published press release.

This vehicle will be the first fully electric three-row SUV and the first Toyota electric vehicle built in the United States.

"As we've seen, the three-row SUV market is expanding, and the electrification of these products, as we see it, is changing, with more people transitioning to electric vehicles," said Susan Elkington, President of Toyota Kentucky.

To support the production of this SUV in Kentucky, Toyota has also announced an additional $2.1 billion investment in its battery plant in North Carolina for new infrastructure in Kentucky.

Three years ago, Toyota opened a new paint shop in Kentucky, which helped free up space at the facility. In 2021, Toyota announced a $461 million investment in the Kentucky plant to expand production capabilities for larger battery-electric vehicles by 2025.

"Our journey here in Kentucky actually started several years ago," Elkington said. "We are making these changes while continuing to support current production, which provides employment for all of our team members."

Toyota will need to implement a new battery assembly process at the Georgetown plant. Currently, Toyota does not plan to change jobs at the Georgetown plant due to the introduction of the new electric SUV. Elkington mentioned that some employees will start transitioning to positions related to electric vehicle production.
