The US will approve the production of aircraft engines for fighter jets in India
The Biden administration is ready to sign an agreement that would allow General Electric to produce jet engines for Indian military aircraft in the country, according to three sources cited by Reuters.

It is expected that the agreement on the completion of the joint engine production will be signed and announced by the time President Joe Biden meets with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on June 22 during an official state visit.

The White House, which stated in January that it received a request for joint engine production in India, declined to comment. General Electric did not respond to a request for comment.

Washington is working to deepen ties with India and sees deeper military and technological connections with the South Asian country as a key counterbalance to China's dominance in the region.

The Indian state-owned company Hindustan Aeronautics previously stated that it plans to use the GE-produced F414 engine for its second-generation light combat aircraft and is in talks for domestic production of these engines.

The deal is not yet finalized and also requires notification to the US Congress, according to two people familiar with the agreement. Washington strictly controls which domestic military technologies can be transferred or sold to other countries.

India is capable of producing fighters within the country, but it does not have the capability to manufacture engines for them. India intends to produce more than 350 fighters for its Air Force and Navy over the next two decades, which could be equipped with GE 414 engines.
