MediaTek management told about company's plans to bring to the market hardware solutions with support for mobile communication of the fifth generation (5G).

It is reported that MediaTek will soon release a standalone modem Helio M70 with support for 5G. It will be manufactured at TSMC using 7-nanometer technology. The data transfer rate will theoretically be able to reach 5 Gbit/s.Devices equipped with this chip will be presented in the first half of next year.

In addition, MediaTek designs a mobile processor with an integrated 5G modem. This "system on a chip" is planned to be announced at the end of 2019, and smartphones on the new platform are likely to debut no earlier than 2020.

It is noted that the integration of 5G-modem directly into the mobile processor will reduce the total cost of components for the next generation of cellular devices.

Overall, MediaTek is reportedly currently reviewing research and development budgets to accelerate the introduction of 5G technologies. Investment in 5G solutions will exceed the cost of 4G projects.
