Google Cloud has introduced an optimized image based on CentOS 7
Google has announced a public preview of a CentOS 7-based virtual machine image optimized for high-performance computing (HPC). This image is claimed to make it easier to create instances of virtual machines configured for optimal CPU usage in Google Cloud distributed cloud systems.

It is noted that the delay in data exchange between instances of virtual machines does not exceed 10 microseconds, which improves the scaling of distributed applications. As stated in the company, previously this required a deep knowledge of the features of Google Cloud, but the use of new images allows you to simplify the deployment of instances and their maintenance.

It is noted that the HPC VM image easily replaces the standard CentOS 7 image. It is available in the Google Cloud Marketplace for free. At the same time, it is still unclear whether the transfer of virtual machine images to CentOS 8 or their analogues is planned. Note that we previously reported on the availability of the beta version of AlmaLinux, which is positioned as a replacement for the latest version of CentOS.
