They will require most apps to use Google's payment system to download paid content inside apps and games, as well as updates and subscriptions. This ensures that the company receives its legal 30% of payments within Android apps. In principle, such requirements have existed for years, but some major developers, including Netflix, Spotify Technology, Match Group, and Epic Games, have successfully circumvented them. Netflix and Spotify have encouraged users to use credit cards to avoid Google's deductions. Match Group, which is behind the famous Dating service Tinder, launched a similar payment process last year. Recently, Fortnite players were allowed to purchase in-game upgrades with direct payments from Epic Games. As a result, a huge scandal broke out, Google and Apple removed Fortnite from their app stores, and Epic is now suing both IT giants.
