| What if your Microsoft Surface got a 17.3 " screen and enough power to replace your gaming desktop? This question was answered by the Taiwanese company ASUS, which presented to the visitors of CES 2019 gaming laptop ROG Mothership (GZ700) in a vertical design, deflected back stand and switchable keyboard in the spirit of Surface. The computer is very similar to the Microsoft Surface tablet, brought to a logical conclusion in the direction of extreme build-up of gaming capabilities. The idea of a gaming laptop in a vertical position is successful in terms of cooling and ventilation needs — it is much more effective than the case lying on the table. But the similarities end at the Surface with structural elements of design. ROG Mothership is equipped with a screen with a resolution of only 1080p, but its refresh rate is 144 Hz, response time 3 MS, and there is support for G-Sync. This NVIDIA frame sync technology works in conjunction with the GeForce RTX 2080 mobile video card. The Central processor is the flagship 6-core 12-stream mobile chip Intel Core i9-8950HK with power consumption up to 45 watts. CPU and GPU got overclocked due to the improved heat sink. The disk subsystem is represented by an array of three NVMe SSDS combined in a RAID 0 bundle (acceleration with an increased risk of data loss). The amount of RAM DDR4 can reach 64 GB. There is also support for Windows Hello face authentication. Of the built-in ports, there are three USB-C with Thunderbolt 3 support, a regular USB-C and four USB-a, HDMI, Ethernet and SD card drive. Like many heavy duty gaming laptops, two 280 W chargers are needed for power. | |
