A video card with a physical switch between 8 and 16 GB of memory from Paulo Gomes and Casual Gamers
Video cards with soldered additional memory have been seen before, but the latest project by Paulo Gomes and Casual Gamers is truly unique. The authors have created a 3D card with a physical memory capacity switch: either 8 GB or 16 GB.

The authors took an MSI GeForce RTX 3070 graphics card, disassembled the original memory chips, and replaced them with chips with twice the capacity, resulting in a total of 16 GB of memory for the card.

Unfortunately, there are few technical details available about the project, so it is unclear how the memory capacity switching capability was implemented. It is possible that two BIOSes are used for this purpose. Perhaps a video will be released on Paulo Gomes' channel later, as the specialists responsible for the modification are affiliated with his team.

As for testing, the additional memory capacity proved to be crucial in some games, while others did not show significant improvements, which is logical. The shortage of 8 GB, which has been widely discussed lately, only affects certain newer projects.
